Summer Vacation 2

On Day 2, we woke up and ate our free breakfast. We packed up and headed out to the Abilene Zoo.

It was a small zoo, so we were able to see most all of it in a few hours. There was a peacock and some guineas running around free. 

Millie was not sure about touching the albino snake.

We rode the little train.

Then we took off for Lubbock and the LWML convention. 

Summer Vacation 1

Two years ago we went on a Texas summer road trip and had a great time. This year we did another one. I am serving as Zone president of my local Lutheran Women Missionary League and our Texas District convention this year was in Lubbock. I'd never been there; neither had Scott, so I planned for this to be our summer vacation. I planned it down to the minute and it went so well. 

I knew that we couldn't make the whole trip in one day - didn't want to, anyway, so I looked at several ways and things just didn't work out until Grace said that she wanted to see the Alamo - bam. So we left super early Wednesday morning, missing out on Houston traffic and got to San Antonio right as the Alamo opened.

So we saw the Alamo and then walked down to the Riverwalk to do a River cruise. It was really nice. We walked down and ate at the oldest restaurant on the Riverwalk.

We stopped at Lulu's Bakery that was featured at Man vs Food and got a 3-lb cinnamon roll. We ate a little on it during the trip, but I ended up giving it to my summer school kids. It was delicious.

We stopped at some quilt shops to pick up Row by Rows, but I'll post separately about those ;)

We spent the night at Abilene at a really decent Choice hotel with free wi-fi and free breakfast. 

We ate at a hamburger joint, Wholly Cow with ice cream and beer. 

That's the end of our first day. We were sooo tired.

Girl Scouts

This has been our best girl scout year so far. We gained some new girls and they have really enriched our troop. We started the year in September going to Camp Robinwood for our first camp. It was a ton of fun and whetted our appetite for more. We had a booth at World Thinking Day - Ireland. We did a troop retreat to Camp Waluta. Some of us went to a Science of Fairy Tales camp at Camp Pryor. I was able to be a delegate at the annual council meeting at Camp Agnes Arnold where I heard the National President of GSUSA speak.

Recent Craftiness

I've started making little mug rugs. These are for Millie and Grace's teachers. I trace out the letters on fusible backing, iron that to pretty fabric then zigzag around that to applique that to the background fabric. Then I make a quilt sandwich, quilt it and then bind it. I made one for my nana for her 85th birthday. That one I did the fold over binding. I've gotten good at binding in some ways. I'm still working on making it look good from the back. 

This is a Valentine's Day wall hanging I designed. I finished it and brought it to show and tell at my LQS. I was worried about it hanging unevenly but I was told it was because I didn't quilt in all the space. Now I need to go back through and FMQ in all of the spaces. Maybe with a light pink or white. Duh!

Self-control keeps us anchored. Proverbs 25:28 Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control. Greek egkrateia - continence, temperance, self-control akrasia - excess, self-indulgence "that's enough for now" 1 Cor 6:12 "Everything is permissible for me" but not everything is beneficial; "Everything is permissible for me" but I will not be mastered by anything. Cease to be enslaved by indulgence. Greek - exousia - authority, right and power Self-control is an issue of mastery, authority and boundaries. God demanded walls in his dwelling places - He dwells in us today - self-control is our wall of protection; self-control is the ability to make choices and decide to remain within the boundaries of victory.
