Dread Pirate Mommy

Fairy Princess and her security guard. Scott came up with their costumes this year. I thought it was cheesy, but it was well-received from the audience. Millie was so funny. Scott had a ear bud in his ear like a Secret Service agent and she found it. He switched her to the other arm, but she kept peering around his head to find it.

Kitchen redo

So "redo" may be doing it a bit brown. We're painting. I don't know why, but I just want a green kitchen. So we sampled and searched until we found the right greens that we love. Scott did a ok job for an amateur painting it. We used the blank wall by the refrigerator to make a chalkboard wall. I have better pics on my phone, but it turned out really well. I think we're going to do the chair rail in a bright red and I ordered a red vegetable wall paper border to go around the cabinets. I think we're going to paint the cabinets a light minty green. We were going to do the chair rail that color, but we didn't like it. We haven't made a final decision on the cabinets yet. Small steps. I think I want a green tile backsplash, but we're not there yet. I'm just so pleased with the green. I have been and I will be looking for antique vegetable stuff in reds and greens. I hope next week we'll get the chair rail painted and the wall paper border up.

Spring Break Trip

This spring break I took a 2-day trip to New Orleans with my friend Joyce. Scott took the girls to his parents for those 2 days. We had a great time. It's good to be with the kids, but it's nice sometimes to get away too. We are similar travelers, so we had a list and we went everywhere we wanted to go.
Jackson Square and St. Louis Cathedral behind it. This was a nice place in the French Quarter to sit and rest. It's so old and so beautiful!

Beer sampler at Crescent City Brewhouse. Shiner is better!

At Lafayette Park every Wednesday there is a concert with lots of vendors of food and drinks. I had the pork tacos and they were DELICIOUS! Great atmosphere. There were people from all walks of life and situation there.

Blue Crawfish at the Insectarium

Blue Dog - evidently he is a thing. My friend knew all about him. I've never noticed.

Is this a fiddlehead fern? It was in an exhibit at the Insectarium and I just loved it!

French Market

Nice house down the road from where we stayed. We stayed in a converted mansion. It was fine. It wasn't a hotel, but it was ok.

Big bug statuary at the Insectarium

Me on a giant worm exhibit at the Insectarium. It was a really neat thing for kids and adults. It was very educational and reasonably priced. I could have stayed in the gift shop for hours, but my friend (fortunately) was not interested. I got the girls some smashed pennies and I got Millie a book to put them in.

This is me in front of the Mississippi River. I don't know what's wrong with the bottom of my dress.

This is the first trip I've taken with my new phone. It was neat to check in everywhere. Now people know all about my vacation, for better or worse. We ate at a restaurant that was on Diners, Drive ins and Dives and it was really good. We went to see really good jazz at Preservation Hall. Most places only took cash, which was inconvenient. The trolley cars and buses were great during the day, but it was hell trying to get back to the car after dark. All in all an incredible trip, though.

Granny square quilt

I jumped on the bandwagon. I love crochet granny squares and now it's a hot new quilting square. I love it. This is going to be for my friend Michelle. I've made some other squares to add to it and I'll put in some sashing to make it bigger. I really like it, but it's a work in progress.
I'm working on some baby gifts when I can get into my sewing room.
Spring Break is next week, but I'm going to be gone to New Orleans for a few days.

Finished

I started this a few years ago and just made it up as I went along. It was my first experience with half-square triangles and I kind of taught myself. It's not perfect. I made the tree, then waited a while to see how I wanted to finish it. Now it's finished. I put in the trunk and quilted it and added some hand quilting. It's a nice wall hanging, I think. It's a first attempt :)
